Description

Dancing with Beauvoir: Jazz and the French
by Colin Nettelbeck.

Melbourne University Press, Carlton, 2004.
First Edition, paperback with flaps. 241 pp.

Australian scholar Nettelbeck ‘shows how French literature drew much of its inspiration from jazz. Exponents of the form included Paul Morand, George Perec and Paul Celine, whose work had an impact on Ezra Pound, Henry Miller and Kurt Vonnegut. Similarly, jazz helped inspire the work of Jean-Paul Sartre and, to a greater extent, Simone de Beauvoir’ leading her to the ‘discovery of what she described as “the second sex” and the “profound analogy” between the oppression confronting blacks and women’.
– The Age, review, 25 September 2004.

Condition: Minor pencil marks in margins. Overall, in very good condition.
