The Brineshrimp
by Rhyll McMaster.
University of Queensland Press, St Lucia, 1972.
First Edition, paperback.
Working in the confessional mode of women’s writing of the period, McMaster crafts disturbing miniatures of domestic life. This first collection of poet and novelist Rhyll McMaster is no 9 in QUP’s highly influential paperback poet series (1970-1978) which circulated the works of new poets including, McMaster, David Malouf, JS Harry, Michael Dransfield, Roger McDonald, Rodney Hall, Jennifer Maiden and Vicki Viidikas, among others. Edited by McMaster’s first husband Roger McDonald, David Malouf is credited with first pitching the idea for the series of cheap editions of contemporary poets. While alert to an increasing readership for contemporary poetry in the 1970s, the series nonetheless was a bold move. Many of the poets were unknown and this their first publication.
