All That False Instruction
by Kerryn Higgs.
Spinifex Press, Melbourne, 2001.
Reprint, paperback.
252 pp.
The first Australian openly lesbian novel, All That False Instruction, was originally published by Angus & Robertson in 1975 under the pseudonym Elizabeth Riley after Higgs’ mother threatened to sue. The novel nonetheless was a significant publication in the International Year of the Woman by a savvy mainstream publisher with an eye on an emerging (second-wave) feminist readership.
The Spinifex publication notably restores the original Melbourne setting changed to Sydney by A & R presumably to further conceal the identity of the author. See: Kerryn Higgs, “The life of Riley”, Southerly, vol. 61, no. 3, autumn 2001.
Condition: Pages are tanned, but otherwise in excellent condition.
