Description

The Catherine Wheel
by Elizabeth Harrower.

Sirius (Angus & Robertson), Sydney, 1979.
Reprint, paperback.

The Catherine Wheel was first published by Cassel & Co London, the same year as The L Shaped Room, Lynne Reid Bank’s quasi-feminist novel on the cusp of the sexual liberation. Also set in a London boarding house in the late 1950s, Harrower’s psychological novel about a young woman’s relationship with a narcissist presciently critiques the double bind of women’s oppression and their complicity, so essential to the second feminist wave. Nineteen years after it was first published, the Sirius edition recycled Harrower for a now well-established Australian feminist market.

Condition: Stiff paperback, slight curl to cover, crease, mark on outer edge, otherwise clean very good condition.
