Description

Sugar Heaven (A Vulgar Working Classic)
by Jean Devanny.

Vulgar Press, Carlton North, 2002.
Reprint, paperback.

Includes an essay by Carol Ferrier and ‘The working Class Contribution to Australian Literature’ by Jean Devanny. Cover image of sugar cane from the Government Printing Office, NSW.

A Social realist novel depicting the Weils disease sugar industry North Queensland strike of 1935, Sugar Heaven was first published by Modern Publishers, the publishing arm of the Australian Communist Party, in 1936. According to Moore, a Soviet edition was published in 1963 and in 1982 Redback Press brought out the second Australian edition. ‘Sugar Heaven’s vision of the working lives of rural Australians is counter to many white nationalist myths about Australia’s past. Its real success is to realise a utopian, international genre through a regional industrial conflict, at the same time challenging white Australian certainties about women, race relations, sexuality, community and domestic life.’ (Moore, Introduction, p.7)

Condition: Apart from minor corner cover curl, light tanning to pages and small stain edges and several pages, in very good condition.

Stubbmled accross your blog and decided to have a very quick study, not what I usually do, but I found this blog excellent. Great to see a web site that has great content, and actually makes some sense. Anyway, great write up.
