Outback is based on a journal Cynthia Nolan kept of the journey she and Sidney Nolan took into Australia’s interior in 1948. It took Nolan 14 years to find a publisher for Outback, and it was no accident that Methuen agreed to publish it at the height of the British craze for her husband’s work; or that her observations of settings and conversations offer important contexts for many of his major paintings of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Outback was the first of five increasingly dark literary portraits of the artist Cynthia Nolan wrote before her suicide in 1976.
