Room to Move: The Redress Press Anthology of Women’s Short Stories
Edited by Suzanne Falkiner.
Allen & Unwin, North Sydney, 1985.
First Edition hardback.
Cover Illustration: ‘The Bloody Chamber’ (1983) by Vivienne Shark LeWitt.
The collection was compiled from a 1984 call out to women writers by the Sydney feminist publishing and book packaging collective Redress Press, founded by Pat Wooley (Wild & Wooley). 700 submissions of known and unknown writers were received and whittled down by the editor to 32 stories ‘representing a balanced selection of modern writing.’ Despite the apparent open process of selection, little new talent was uncovered. Most of the writers, Elizabeth Jolley, Kylie Tennant, Helen Garner, Carmel Bird, Thea Astley, Olga Masters, Finola Moorhead, Fay Zwicky and Vicki Viidikas were established. The collection includes Garner’s much anthologised ‘The Life of Art’ and Viidikas’ ‘A Modern Snow White’.
Condition: Small tears to top of spine, right-hand corner and on the back along spine of dust jacket. Minor shelf wear to bottom of boards. Pages are clean, marked and in near fine condition.
